Dust is a science fiction
novel written by Arthur Slade, a successful Canadian author. It is about a
twelve-year-old boy named Robert Steelgate, trying to find his missing brother
Matthew Steelgate. It takes place in Saskatchewan in a humid little town called
“Horshoe.” The townspeople were forgetting the disappearance of Matthew after
the arrival of a mysterious and strange character named Abram Harsich. Abram
announces that that he is going to build a rainmill to bring prosperity back to
the drought-ravaged community. Robert then becomes suspicious of Abram. Is he
actually saying the truth? Does he have to do with the disappearance of
Matthew?
The main theme in this
novel is Family. Family is the most important in this novel because it represented
love between Robert and Matthew. Robert didn’t want to give up looking for his
missing brother Matthew. Robert wanted to bring the whole family back again.
Robert didn’t rely on his brain but relied in his heart. Lepidopterists
represents the souls of children that Abram stole and the bond between the
brothers. After Matthews disappearance, other kids like Mike Tuppence, and Susan
Vaganski went missing. After Abram Harsich came, Roberts mother and father
forgot the event of the disappearance of Matthew. Harsich was reopening the
theatre to present a mirror that allowed a person to picture the things that
are going on their head. Then, Robert saw Uncle Edmund. Robert was told “evil”
from Edmund. Not only that, uncle Edmond pointed directly at Abram. They were
falling into Abrams spell. They thought that Abram was the one to bring rain to
their humid town. Robert though, he wasn’t. But he had some issues of his own.
Arthur Slade (author)
did a terrific job in the central idea. He had delivered the message of how
family comes first and that it is the key thing that brought us to this world. The
message that Arthur Slade is trying to deliver to the reader is that people
should always help each other so that we can get a better future. He makes us
picture the story that is happening.
Dust was sensational.
What I mean by that is this book catches interest of every reader whether you
are a non fiction reader or you’re a young child. I was definitely caught
interest with this book.
Hello Habin,
ReplyDeleteGreat review. I think you should explain a little more on the setting of this review, like is the setting an abandoned place in Saskatchewan or full of people. At the end does Robert stop Abram and find his brother or will that happen in another book. Otherwise good review I can clearly understand the story.
Sincerely, Matteo Gaussorgues.
Dear Habin, my question for you is this. What emotions do you think the author was trying to inspire in the reader? Also, do you think that the author succeed in doing so?
ReplyDeleteSincerely, Ian H.
Dear Habin,
ReplyDeleteYour review was very mysterious. You presented the main character in your review but i was wondering what some of robert’s traits. All in all
very well written review.
Sincerely, Kaia
Dear Habin,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job coming up with the theme family. But I was wondering why the brother was the only one that cared about Mathew's disappearance and not his parents.
With all regards,
Adam Shaaban
Dear, Habin
ReplyDeleteThank you for this amazing book review. I had one question, what did the idea of family drive the characters in this novel to do, did it encourage them to try harder?

Devlin
Dear, Habin
ReplyDeleteThank you for this amazing review. I just had one question, what did the idea of having a family all together drive the character in this novel to do, did it encourage them to try harder?

Dear Matteo,
ReplyDeleteRobert and his family lives at a countryside near downtown. Robert does stop Abram. It seems that he was the one who kidnapped Matthew. At the end, the family rejoins and lives happy.
Thank you for your question and I hope it helped
Sincerely,
Habin Choi
Dear Ian,
ReplyDeleteGood question. I think the emotion that the author wants us to feel is love and careness.
I feel the author is very successful doing so. He is very good delivering the emotion and theme that he thought about. Thank you for your question and I hope this helped
Sincerely,
Habin Choi
Dear Kaia,
ReplyDeleteWell, some of Robert traits is that he is kind hearted boy, he is a bit lazy, but the most important is that he works to reach the goal. He never gave up on finding Matthew. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any of his appearances (external traits). Thank you and I hope this helps
Sincerely,
Habin Choi
Dear Adam,
ReplyDeleteHe was the only one who cared about his missing brother Matthew because Robert’s parents were having good dreams that made them forget the whole disappearance. Robert also had good dreams lately but didn’t give up like this parents did. Thank you for your question.
Sincerely,
Habin Choi
Dear Devlin,
ReplyDeleteGood question. Robert’s parent forgot everything about their missing son Matthew. Every time Robert sees Matthews bed, he feel guilty and ashamed of himself. Matthew didn’t give up on Robert and now Robert won’t give up on Matthew. The bond between bros. Everyday, he attemps to try and find his brother but always fails. At the end, they meet again and they live happily ever after. Thank you and I hope this response helped.
Sincerely,
Habin Choi
