Owls in The Family Book Review by Tom

Owls in The Family is a comedy fictional novel by Farley Mowat. The setting is in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This book is about a boy who has many different, exotic pets at his house. He goes searching for a pair of owls with his friends. He finds one and takes care of it. Later, he gets ahold of another owl, which he also brings home.

The conflict is at the end of the story because the boy has to give his owls to one of his friends, due to his family needing to move to Toronto. I think the central idea of the story is to be kind to animals. The author was clear with the central idea, for example, the boy trades his scout knife for an owl that kids are throwing rocks at. Throughout the book he is kind to his pets.

Farley Mowat included aspects of his childhood because he was allowed to have many pets when he lived in Saskatchewan.

I found this book very amusing and constantly interesting. I highly recommend reading it. Personally, I would give this novel 4 stars because it was well written, funny and generally interesting.

  1. Dear Tom.

I am wondering if you could find the place where the main character's emotions are.

    1. Dear Ben,
The emotions of the main character, Billy, are mostly happy and amused. There was a time in the novel were the dog, Mutt, was bitten on the nose by an owl and the Billy felt sorry for the dog and also quite amused.

      Sincerely,
      Tom

  2. Dear Tom,
You did a great job explaining what the book is about. My only question is: could you have put a bit more detail about the setting and the owls? Did they have names and what did they look like?

    Thanks, Brett Mews

    1. Dear Brett,
The setting is described to have prairies. The eldest owl, Wol, was found after what appeared to be a storm. Weeps, the younger owl, was found in an oil drum and other kids were throwing stones on him. The main character, Billy, traded his scout knife to save Weeps. Wol was named after the owl in Winnie the Pooh and weeps was named due to the fact that he made a Weeping like sound.

      Sincerely,
      Tom

  3. Dear Tom, I was wondering if the main idea was something deeper than being kind to animals. maybe something like loss or friend ship.

    1. Dear Ian,
The main idea is to be kind to animals but yes you are right, within the book the main character is all about friendship. He is friendly and kind to both people and animals.
      Sincerely,
      Tom M.

  4. Dear Tom,

I enjoyed your book review. You said that the boy gave away his owls at the end of the novel, could you please tell me some of the emotions he was feeling like when he gave away his owls? For instance, was he sad that the owls were gone, but happy they had a home?

    Thanks,
    Carter Whyte

    1. Dear Carter,
At the end of the novel, the main character had to give away his owls but he made arrangements with one of his friends. His friend would take care of them and had approval by his parents. The main character felt sad of the fact that he had to leave all of his pets, (except his dog, Mutt) but also happy they had a home.
      Sincerely,
      Tom
