The
People of Sparks is a science fiction novel written by Jeanne DuPrau. The
two main characters in Ember are Lina Mayfleet, Doon Harrow, and Tick. This
novel takes place in a city above ground that has just started to thrive with
resources and food. Sparks is a decrepit old citie with many people on the top
of the earth. The original residents of Sparks has started to run low on food
when 400 people from Ember arrive. That's 400 more mouths to feed. These two
groups of citizens have started to rebel against each other and the two cities
are preparing for war and Tick is ready to lead Emberites to war. Doon and Lina
are determined to help these two groups get along and realize that war won't
solve anything it’ll just ruin what's already here.
Throughout the novel Lina has had
trouble making life decisions. Once Lina started looking for solutions to the
war, she became aware that the hardest part about stopping war is to look for
solutions and it is a lot easier to join war then stop it. But she knew if she
decided to stop the war all of the trouble to not join it would be worth it and
would save both cities from destroying each other and save them from destroying
their mental health. Lina and Doon had thought that stopping war would be much
easier than it was, not only was the two cities ready to fight they already
knew what war does and how it just destroys and doesn't solve anything and if
that didn't stop them from war it would be hard to do it on their own. Doon had
looked up to a character named Tick but he was corrupt and Doon couldn't see
it. Doon thought Tick was a hero and Tick had gotten Doon to think war was the
only way of solving problems but Lina help Doon realize Tick isn't a good
person and their are other solutions besides war.
The author successfully shows the
main point throughout the book showing each conflict and how the characters are
able to solve them. This book made a big impact on how the world tries to solve
conflicts by war when their are many other ways you can solve the disputes .
When Paris was attacked it was very sad and scary but Paris should not have
responded to that by bombing ISIS many times and by doing that ISIS may respond
by attacking them. A sentence from Sparks stuck with me it was “War is happened
by someone doing something mean and then the other person does something mean
back and it goes back and forth and usually what they do to each other gets
worse each time” This is just so true and people in the world need to realize
it and need to realise that war isn't the solution and I have been trying to
let people know that.
Dear Zac,
ReplyDeleteI liked your book review it was very descriptive. You mention a character named Tick in your book review, could you tell me a few of Tick’s character traits or a few of his morals?
Thank you,
Carter Whyte
Dear Carter,
DeleteTick had many character traits one of them is that Tick was a very cunning person because in the book Tick had tricked Doon into liking him so he wouldn't try to stop him in his plays to cause war. He is also a leader but in the wrong things because he stepped up and took the lead for the emberites when they needed it.
Thank you
Zac
Dear Zach,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your interesting review. You said that there are other ways to avoid wars, what in your opinion are those solutions?
Sincerely,
Simran Singh
Dear Simran,
DeleteIn my opinion some ways to avoid war is to make a compromise or to see that war will not solve anything just create destruction and internal destruction. Another way to avoid war is to treat everyone fairly and if they are treating you fairly recognise that they are trying hard.
Thank you
Zac
Dear Zac,
ReplyDeleteYour review was very exciting and thoughtful. My question is what was it about Tick's character that made Doon think of Tick as a hero.
With all regards,
Adam Shaaban
Dear Adam,
DeleteDoon thought of Tick as a hero because the Emberities were not getting enough to eat from the residents of Sparks and Tick stood up and showed the Emberites that they were getting mistreated and how they should fight back. Doon thought of Tick as a hero for willing to stand up and lead Emberites to battle
Thank you
Zac
Dear Zac,
ReplyDeleteOne of the main themes in DuPrau's first novel, "City of Ember" was greed. What do you think is one of the major themes in her second novel"People of Sparks". Please support with an example or two from the novel.
Thank you
Mr. King
Dear Zac,
ReplyDeleteTick is a very interesting character. Towards the end of the novel we learn that Tick is the one who played the "pranks" against his own people in an effort to incite them to fight. Why do you think Tick this?
Sincerely,
Mr. King
Dear Mr. King
DeleteI think that Tick played the “pranks” on his own people because Tick needed to be better than everyone else and fighting would allow him to prove himself. He also played pranks because he was corrupt just like the previous mayor and all he wanted was war, death and destruction and death and destruction would give him power to become the next leader.
Thank you
Dear Zac,
ReplyDeleteThe book review was amazing except there was one problem, you were vague at times. An example of this is when you said there were ways to avoid wars. What were those ways? Other than that this book review was amazing and might read this book myself!
Sincerely,
Xito
Dear Xito
DeleteSome of the ways to avoid war is to solve the conflict through talking it out or to make a compromise. The emberites could have also realized that the residents of Sparks are doing their best. Another way to redirect war is to realize that war will not solve their problems they are facing but just make the problems worse.
Thank you
Zac
