Dragon Seer's Gift Book Review by Ben

Dragon Seer’s Gift by Janet McNaughton, is about a 12 year old boy Gwyn who wants to get his history grades up by doing a Heritage Fair project but ends up going on a crazy adventure right in his own home!
The main idea of the story is how a boy named Gwyn needs to do a family heritage project but turns out to become a mission on getting past Sunny (Gwyn’s moms friend) to get tablets to help the little dragon hermit break a curse to make everyone believe and see the dragons.  They then find out that the problem is getting worse they find out that little Hermit is ageing and they have to take him to the past by getting him to the pond where they find out later Architects find fossils from what appears to be a dragon. The book really touched me at the end of the book because of the character we gotten used to leaves and we don’t hear from him again... I almost teared up from this sad event from when Hermit almost passes away from age catching up.

Gwyn has to get past the school bully and avoid his parents to protect Hermit the dragon or he thinks people will do some crazy experiments on the poor dragon Hermit.  Gwyn and Maddie have to keep up an act not to appear crazy to the people who couldn’t see Hermit.  Gwyn finds out that his problems just start when the tiny dragon Hermit tells them about a curse that needs to be broken and only Maddie and Gwyn can do.
The idea of story is how sometimes some people see things differently than others so we sometimes think differently of them.  It also shows that people don’t always agree and that they want to bring others idea down.  It once again shows that sometimes you maybe have to do something that you don’t want to but you will help that what you love.

I really enjoyed the book. I think McNaughton did an excellent job writing this book. The reader that not all characters may be good at school but can be kind and become a better person by interacting with something.  This book really touched my heart because dragons are known as evil, cruel, fire breathing, killers, destroyers etc.  But McNaughton showed that you can change something and it can still mean something different but still lead to the same thing.

  1. Dear Ben,

Your book sounds very interesting. Could you explain why he has to get past Sunny and explain her character in further detail? Also how did the pond help him go to the past?

    Sincerely

  2. Dear Ben,
Has Janet McNaughton written any other books you'd be interested in reading? What is is about this book that drew you to it in the first place?
