Deadly - Book Review by Kiersten Hall

Deadly is the fourteenth book in the Pretty Little Liars series published by HarperTeen, a division of Harper Collins Publishers. It is written by Sara Shepard. Deadly takes place in Pennsylvania in a town called Rosewood. The timing of the book is present day. The four girls that are the main characters go to a private school called Rosewood Day. It is about a physco anonymous person who sends threatening texts to four teenage girls.

Deadly is quite scary. There is a killer/murder called A. It is man vs. man. A sends mean and threatening texts to Aria, Spencer, Emily and Hannah. Through out the novel A has hurt all the girls physically and mentally. A revealed that Aria’s dad cheated on her mom. That Hannah’s mom was stealing from the bank. Also that Spencer’s dad cheated on her mom. Lastly A hit Hannah with a car.

Even though Deadly is scary it is also very interesting. You learn through out the book that even though Spencer, Aria, Hannah and Emily are rich and spoiled, they still have as many troubles as the next kid. Even though the book is mainly about A there is still high school drama. It is a great book and I totally recommend it.

Deadly is also a little bit educational. You learn how far someone can go to hurt other people. Also you learn how important it is to be careful on the internet and how some people in the world are just bad people. Lastly how people can put up an act that they are totally fine but inside they are hiding all of their scared and hurt. I enjoy reading realistic fiction because I like to be sacred. To me, a novel is not scary when there are aliens, witches and other things that do not really exist. The kind of person that A is could exist in real life and most likely dose. Overall deadly was a great book which taught you stuff and I highly recommend it people over the age of 13.

  1. Dear Kiersten,

I have a question concerning the actions of the main characters. After all the events that happened with the girls, what did they do about it. After the things that happened to them and their friends, did they call the police? Did they find A?

    Sincerely, Hunter

    1. Dear Hunter,

The girls have tried many times to call/tell the police about everything that happened but A always does something so they don't. Like one time A took a photo next to Emily's sleeping friend with a bloody knife to he head and a note saying "if you tell, she dies". No they did not find A yet but there are more books after this one and I know at the end of the series they find A.

      Thanks, Kiersten

  2. Hi Kiersten,

I really enjoyed reading your book review but didn't quite catch the theme, I was wondering if you could further explain the theme and how the realistic aspect of the story affected your perspective. I am also interested to find out of if the girls react and do something about the threats? I can not wait for your response!

    Thanks, Bella.

    1. Dear Bella,

The main theme is secrecy. The realistic aspect of the story affected my perspective because it made the book scarier. It made the book scarier because you think that there are people like A in this world compared to Aliens sending mean text to each other which would never happen. Every text the girls get they always share it with each other. When Aria got the text from A that said that her dad was cheating on her mom she got super mad at her dad and followed him around so she could see the woman that he was cheating on her mom with. She also ended up telling her mom.

      Thanks, Kiersten

  4. Dear Kiersten,
Your book review is very descriptive and has definitely persuaded me to read Deadly. But, I wondered about A's backstory? A sounds like malicious character and I wanted to know a bit more about him/her.

    Sincerely,
    Jacob

    1. Dear Jacob,

Not much of A's background is shared because we can not know who it is yet but who ever it is does have small thin hands. He/she always wears black leather gloves and a black hoodie. A has killed at least 15 people over the course of the entire series. They only send scary texts.

      Thanks, Kiersten
