Paper Towns by John Green is a
fictional novel that was fantastic, interesting, mysterious and unique, I
really enjoyed reading it. The main characters in the novel is Quentin Jacobsen who is
usually called “Q” and Margo Roth Spiegelman. Q’s
life was completely changed by Margo. When they were young they had lots of fun
& had a great bond. As they got older and went into high school their
friendship faded away. They hardly spoke until one night where Margo sneaked
into Q’s room and asked him for a backup man for her elaborate night of
revenge! The next morning there is a detective and Margo’s parents in Q’s
kitchen and Margo is gone. Q is determined to find her and goes all the way
from Orlando, Florida to Agloe, New York within the next 24 hours trying to
find her!
There are many conflicts in the novel Paper
Towns. For me two conflicts stood out. The first one is Q vs. The people
who don't care about Margo. This happened when Q was trying to find Margo and
felt like society doesn’t want to find him. He thinks that it’s his
responsibility to find Margo because they were together her last night. He
thinks that must mean something. He feels like he is the only one who is
concerned & believes his parents don't care about where she is or what she
is doing anymore. The other one that
stood out to me was Margo vs. Her Life. Margo doesn’t understand the point of
worrying or preparing for your future. She thinks it’s a waste of time. She
feels lonely because her family doesn’t care if she leaves or not. Maybe she
just wants her parents to notice her.
In my opinion John Green did a great
job and was very successful in presenting his central idea. It was presented
very clearly and knowledgeable. You could tell, what he was trying to say
through all the very purposeful and descriptive words. Paper
Towns was a very appealing and impressive novel. In my opinion the most
profound and powerful part of the book was when Margo confessed how she really
felt about her life in Orlando at the top floor of the SunTrust building. There
they had a conversation and Margo confessed “It’s a paper town. All those paper people
living in their paper houses,” From then on Q started figuring out how the real
Margo is. I really enjoyed this book and I couldn’t put it down once while I
was reading it. I highly recommend this book for people who like
realistic/adventure novels.
Hi Armita, I really enjoyed your review and I will be sure to read this book soon. You mentioned that John Green was very successful in presenting his central idea in the novel. Could you please explain to me what that central idea was?
ReplyDeleteThank You, Emma
Dear Emma,
DeleteThank you for your comment. There are many central ideas in the novel. One of them is friendship. Margo’s and Q’s friendship was very strong when they were younger and might have faded away when they got older. Q was always a good friend to Margo. Unlike her other friend who caused her to have her night of revenge. And Margo always made sure Q didn’t get beat up. You can tell that their friendship was strong because Q was really the only one who worried about Margo after she left.

Dear Armita,
ReplyDeleteIn your brief description you said that Margo revenge party, but you didn't exilian why. Could you please explain why.
Thanks,
Angelina
Dear Angelina,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. Margo had a night of revenge because of her so called friends. Her boyfriend (Jase) was cheating on her with her best friend (Lacey). Its also because she feels like she doesn't connect with people and feels like she lives in a paper town with paper houses and paper people. She wanted to get her anger out.

Dear Armita,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your book review I almost teared up! But could you explain the characters emotions a bit more because I would most likely tear up if your showed them more emotion in the book review.
Sincerely,
Ben
Hi Armita,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your review. It makes me want to pick up the book and read it myself, since I also find John Green to be an amazing author. You did a great job identifying the main conflicts in the novel. In your opinion what would you say are the major themes in the novel?
Sincerely,
Alexa
Dear Alexa,
DeleteThank you for your comment. I’m glad you agree that John Green is an amazing author. In my opinion I think the major theme in the novel is friendship because Q’s friendship with Margo is the main thing that drove him to go find her.

Dear Armita,
ReplyDeleteI have yet to read Paper Towns but after this review I certainly will. When Margo came and found Q to ask for help, on whom was she trying to get revenge? Could you please explain why she was seeking revenge and how Q was supposed to help her? What happened that night to cause Margo to leave Orlando?
Thanks,
Olivia
Dear Olivia,
DeleteThank you for your comment and good question. Margo was trying to get revenge on her so called friends because they were keeping secrets for her, lying to her and because her boyfriend was cheating on her with her best friend! I think that Q wasn’t really supposed to find her. But it was his love for Margo is what drove him to find her and in my opinion I don't think that it was something that happened that night that caused Margo to leave. I think that it was because she wanted attention and felt like she couldn't be herself in Orlando anymore.
