The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau - Reviewed by Hunter Holden

 The People of Sparks is about a boy and a girl by the name of Lina and Doon who come from a hidden city underground. The City of Ember was built  to protect people from harm going on above the ground which we learn later in the book is because of plagues and wars.h They find a village and send a note down to the underground city about where they are and how to get to it. The book tells all the problems that Lina, Doon and the People of Ember face in the new village.

This book is the sequel to the first book. In the first book they escape the City of Ember. The people of Ember had to walk for a few days to find the village.The people from Ember had high demands coming in to the village such as shelter, food and other things necessary for survival. Sparks only had around 300 people and had to take in around 417. Most of the refugees from Ember stayed in an abandoned hotel that was run down. That included Doon. Lina got to stay in a proper house because of Poppy which is her sister that is still a toddler. They stayed in the nurse’s home. A boy named Torren lives with the nurse and makes life more challenging for Lina. The town’s leaders decided to keep the refugees for 6 months and then send them off to construct their own village. Although, the people of Ember did not know how to build anything above the Earth , or build anything at all. The leaders of Sparks ( Wilmer, Ben and Mary) decide to teach them how to work. It turns out that the people of Ember are completely useless. There are many problems that occur that involve Lina and Doon.

The author makes us think about our ecological footprint and how we affect the world. How many times we can just go to the store and buy food, use and throw away without care. Also what can happen after many wars. An example in the book is when Lina is learning about all the wars and plagues that had happened. If you read the first book, it will leave you wanting to\ read the second book and so forth. I am really intrigued to see what will happen in the next book. The author does a great job at the end of the book with a little mystery and suspense making you want to find out what happens next. I would recommend this book if you like a little bit of mystery and adventure.

    I really enjoyed reading your book. Although I do have a question, you said that Wilmer,Ben and Mary were the leaders of Sparks but you did not give enough info on them. I'd like a brief explanation of who they are ( for example, age and more info).Thanks.

      Dear Jordan,

      The book does not have that much information on all of the town's leaders although I do have some facts about them for you. Ben is the uncle of the troubled boy Torren that lives with the doctor and where Lina stays. Wilmer is usually the last one to vote because sometimes he gets unsure about his decision. Mary is the one with the most will to be fair and make change.

      Lina and Doon as you know are the main characters in the story. Lina likes to run and Doon is a bug freak that likes to read and knows how things work. Torren is the troubled boy that lives with Lina. Tick is the boy that is the leader for the people of Ember but he just wants war. Ms. Murdo is the caregiver for Lina and Poppy after their grandmother dies.

      Dear Zac,

      The war was started by Tick. First off he framed the people of Sparks. He gathered up all of soldiers. The war sort of backfired when something caught on fire and everyone helped to put it out. Doon went to save Torren who was stuck up in a tree that was on fire.

      Dear Ewan,
      The were many problems that happened through out the book. The main conflict was the war. What hapened was Tick gave the people from Ember poison ivy. They got itchy like you would from poison ivy. He blamed it on the people from Sparks which got everyone angry. That is when Tick started his army and tried to attack the people of Sparks with a couple of requests first. The people of Sparks pulled out "the weapon". Their weapon was a gun that injured Ben and started a fire.

      The book is different in a lot of ways then the City of Ember. First off the title of the book is different. In the City of Ember they are underground and still have no clue. They are starting to run out of supplies. In this book they are adapting to new life and still learning new things.
