Death in the Air Reviewed By Sasha Jande

Death in the Air is a mystery novel by Shane Peacock. The main character in Death in the Air
is a young detective named Sherlock Holmes. The novel takes place in the Victorian era when London was gloomy and filled with criminals. One day Sherlock was watching Monsieur Mercure, one of the greatest acrobats in London, doing his performance at the Crystal Palace. While he was watching him, Monsieur Mercure’s trapeze bar suddenly snapped and he came plummeting down to the ground. Sherlock witnessed the whole thing. Sherlock didn’t think that a trapeze bar would just randomly snap so he started looking for anything odd about the bar. He noticed strange cuts on the bar and then he suddenly realized that this was all planed. A few days later he was walking down the street and he noticed that a big reward was to be given to whoever solves the case of Monsieur Mercure. Sherlock then became determined to solve the case and use the reward to go to school and to pay his rent.

Throughout the novel, Sherlock has been struggling making decisions. When he realized that capturing the Brixton Gang was going to be extremely risky, he started second guessing himself. Sherlock also had a very hard time dealing with Inspector Lestrade. Inspector Lestrade was the other man competing for the reward. Since the inspector was high up in the police department, he often restricted Sherlock from  searching for clues and looking around. This often angered or frustrated Sherlock There were many examples of the hatred between these two characters at the end of the book. Sherlock possess many interesting character traits. He is very observant, determined, and clever. All of these traits help Sherlock be the best detective he can be. Despair is a very big element in the novel. There were so many incidents in the novel where Sherlock would see something and feel depressed. Throughout the whole novel, Sherlock constantly felt lonely and sad. This Loneliness that Sherlock was dealing with often affected his actions. I think that it was a good thing that Sherlock was constantly feeling sad. The reason for this is because is Sherlock was happy, he would have more friends. These friends would have distracted him from looking for clues. If he got distracted, it would have taken him a long time to solve the case.

Shane Peacock did a spectacular job showing the central idea in this fantastic novel.  Mr. Peacock did such a good job showing the central idea that I could almost feel Sherlock's emotions. He always said what Sherlock was feeling inside and he described how he was feeling in great detail. I also think that Mr. Peacock made a very good choice choosing despair as the main theme in the novel. It really suited the  gloomy setting but it mainly suited the year that the book takes place in. In the past, there was lots of criminals, crime, and lots of people were poor, hungry, and depressed. All of these elements really complemented the theme of this book. I think that Shane Peacock did a very good job describing all of these elements. He described the setting very well and always was very clear on what was going on. All in All, Death in the Air really changed my view of the world. This book really taught me how hard people have it and that you should always be nice to people no matter what.

  1. Dear Sasha J,

Your book review was very descriptive and well thought out. I do have one question, though. You mentioned the Brixton Gang, but you did not explain who they were. Can you please explain? Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Kyle

    1. Dear Kyle,

Thank you for your great question. The Brixton Gang is the meanest and most gruesome gang in London. The gang consists of four members, Charon, Sutton, Crowley, and Sticks. Being one of the cleverest and low profile gangs in London, they are able to get in and out of the Crystal Palace bank without being noticed. Using a wide variety of clues, Sherlock manages to figure out that the Brixton Gang was responsible for the injury of Monsieur Mercure. Sherlock tracks them down to their warehouse and is nearly killed when he falls into their trap. But with the help of his acrobatic friend, Sherlock manages to escape unharmed. He then comes back to the dreadful warehouse and successfully captures them with the help of the police. I hope this helps!

  2. Hi Sasha J,

I really enjoyed reading your book review. I was wondering if the setting and the struggles of this story motivated Sherlock or depressed him? Also the other characters in the story don't seem involved and I realize that you mentioned friends could distract him but, do you think loneliness might have gotten in the way of mystery solving? I look forward to your answer!

    Thanks, Bella.

    1. Dear Bella,

Thank you for your interesting question. This novel unravels in the poor side of London. At the time, this side of London is filled with ruthless criminals and careless citizens. Sherlock yearns to escape this side of London but, he can’t just leave. To leave, he must work hard and earn money to buy a house in the rich side of London. This thought in the back of Sherlock’s head motivates him to work hard and always do his best. Sherlock is a very independant person. He is able work at his best when alone and he knows this. Sherlock’s loneliness didn’t get in the way of mystery solving because it was his choice to be alone. I hope this helps!

  3. Dear Sasha J,

Your book review was exceptionally written and made me want to read the book. However, at the end of your review you mentioned that Death in the Air made you want to be nice to others more often. Why did this book make you feel that way? Was there any time that Sherlock showed kindness that resulted in his benefit? Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Aidan

    1. Dear Aidan,

Thank you for your great question. In this novel, there are many beggars and homeless folk living on the streets. All of these civilians have an extremely hard time getting money for their families, and food for themselves. This tells me that some people have it very hard and are not as fortunate as us. In this book, I learned that you should always be kind to people because even the smallest acts of kindness can make a beggar's day. Sherlock rarely spoke to anybody. If he did, he was either interrogating them for information or, asking for advice. But, there was the odd time when Sherlock was kind to someone. And this someone, was the Swallow. The Swallow was a young acrobat who performed in circus. Sherlock was very nice to the Swallow because he thought he had information on the case of Monsieur Mercure. It turned out, that the Swallow did have lots of information on this particular case. So after all, this act of kindness did resulted in his benefit. Later on in the novel, Sherlock falls into a dreadful trap. But luckily, he is saved by the Swallow just because of his tiny act of kindness. I hope this helps!

      Sincerely

  4. Dear Sasha J.

Your Book Review was very thorough and clearly displayed a complete understanding of the novel. What do you think of Sherlock's actions? Would you have changed any of his actions during the book?

    Sincerely,

    1. Dear Jacob,

Thank you for your great comment. In my opinion, I think that Sherlock constantly made the right decisions. However, I do think that he would have had the upper hand if he was a bit more patient. Occasionally, Sherlock was impulsive and this often resulted in conflict. One time, Sherlock was eavesdropping on the floor below a group of criminals. His goal was to acquire information about the case of Monsieur Mercure. He slowly grew impatient to a point where he bursted onto the criminal’s floor. At that moment, he fell into a dreadful trap and had no hopes of escaping. I think that Sherlock should have waited a bit longer because, the criminals could have leaked important information about the case of Monsieur Mercure. Overall, I enjoyed Sherlock's personality and I think that he was a great character.

  5. Dear Sasha,

Sherlock Holmes is a young boy who is gifted with crime-solving abilities. Could you please provide me with 3 internal character traits of young Sherlock Holmes and support each trait briefly.

    Sincerely,

    1. Dear Mister King,

Thank you for your great comment. Sherlock indeed has many blossoming crime-solving abilities. There are three main character traits that help Sherlock be the best detective that he can be. The first character trait that Sherlock possesses is determination. Sherlock is determined because he would never give up on the reward even when other people would discourage him and put him down like Inspector Lestrade. The second character trait that Sherlock possesses is that he is observant. Sherlock is observant because he is able to notice the smallest details that nobody else can notice. An example of this is when Sherlock notices tiny cuts in a trapeze bar. The final character trait that Sherlock has is cleverness. Sherlock is able to solve a crime that the police can’t solve. He is able to piece together clues and use each clue to help him solve the case. And, he is able to persuade almost anybody using many clever methods. Overall, Sherlock is a gifted detective that is determined, observant, and clever.

      Sincerely,

      Sasha Jande
