Saving Houdini Reviewed By Elena Cochen

My INS novel, Saving Houdini, revolves around the lives of many characters. The author of my novel is Michael Redhill. This novel is a fiction, adventure, and mysterious novel. The many characters are from the past, but the one very unique character named Dashiel is from the future. When Dash gets sent back in time, by a mysterious magic trick, he meets Walter. Dash and Walt became good friends. They both try to find Mr. Harry Houdini and his manager Mr. Solomon Jacobson. On the way they meet another magician named Blumenthal. They all try to help Dash get back to his home in 2011 Toronto, not 1926 Toronto.

Dash has to go through the pain of loneliness because he is away from his family, and he has to break through the pain. Since Dash is in the past, his parents are still in the future. Dash has to get past police to continue on his journey. He gets into deep trouble because he looks like a run-away, as he has no parents with him.  Walt is a run-away. Many things are different in 1926 compared to 2011. Dash has no money to pay for anything because the money is different. The main theme in this novel is friendship and trust. All of the characters have to rely on each other for support.

The author of this book didn’t make it easy to find the central idea. If you truly understand exactly everything about the plot, then it will be easy to find the central idea. The central ideas the author chose were also quite interesting and realistic. This book might be a little puzzling because past present and future are sometimes confusing. The author has yet to learn how to explain external traits. The themes are friendship and trust like I mentioned before. The trust is really important in this novel without the trust the book will instantly fall apart.

This book is worth thinking about reading as it really gets you thinking. Is there a way to go back in time? What would you do if you were sent back in time by accident?

  1. Hi Elena,

This sounds like a very interesting book. I was wondering how you thought the setting and theme impacted the characters? I also wanted to know how the characters grew and evolved throughout this novel, did the situation help Dash want to solve his problem or did it intimidate him? I look forward to your answer!

    Thanks, Bella.

    1. Dear Bella,

It wasn't Dash's fault that he got sent back in time. Dash was chosen for a magic trick. That magic trick was meant that he was supposed to go back in time, and Dash was not expecting that. Dash didn't really want to get into this situation, so nothing made Dash want to solve the problem that much other than getting back to his home.

      Sincerely,
      Elena

  2. Dear Elena,
You mentioned the character Harry Houdini, who was said to be a magician, but I didn't really understand his role in the book. Could you explain what he does to save Dash?

    Thanks,

    1. Dear Arnav,

Harry Houdini was the only person who Dash could think of to get hime back to present time. Houdini also sheltered Dash (and Walter). Dash and Walter originally try to ask Mr. Blumenthal for help, but he didn't say yes. Dash and Walter got help by Houdini and Sol, his manager.

      Sincerely,
      Elena

    2. Dear Arnav,

Harry Houdini was one of the main characters in the book. Houdini is the only person that Dash could think of who could send him back to present time. Dash and Walter tried asking Blumenthal for help, but he said no. Houdini also provided shelter for Dash and Walter.

Do his parents notice him gone? What does he do when he comes back to the present, if he comes back.

    Sincerely

    1. Dear Daanish,

That is a very good question. Dash's parents do notice that he has disappeared, just not the same way as you would think. Dash was chosen to be the assistant for a magic trick. He use going to be the person,in the magic trick, to disappear. While Dash is gone he went back in time, and that is where the story takes place. But when Dash is in the past his parents and the rest of the crowd seemed to have froze. When Dash finds his way back to the present, his parents are in the exact same position, and clapping after Dash exited the stage.

      Sincerely,
      Elena

I enjoyed reading your book review very much. You mentioned the characters Walter and Dash. Would you be able to describe some of their character traits and give examples of how they showed them?

    Sincerely,
    Kristi

    1. Dear Kristi,

your question is very thought through. Dash and Walt met in a barber shop. Dash is very planed out and brave. Walter is always doubtful and demanding. I hope this answers your question.

      Sincerely,
      Elena

    1. Dear Makyla,
That is a very good question. In 1926 the money was different, that meant Dash couldn't buy anything, and that was really hard for him. Also Dash wasn't used to the way people lived in 1926, for example: people walked more that driving a car. dash also had difficulty going back in time because his family didn't own their house in 1926! Dash had to find places to sleep every night (That was what Houdini did).

      Sincerely,
      Elena
